An Assessment of Physical Activity During a Pandemic

Aloha! My name is Misty Pacheco and you are invited to take part in a research study. I am Chair and an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

What am I being asked to do?

If you participate in this project, you will be asked to fill out a survey.

Taking part in this study is your choice.

Your participation in this project is completely voluntary. You may stop participating at any time. If you stop being in the study, there will be no penalty or loss to you. Your choice to participate or not participate will not affect you as a student within the University of Hawaii system.

Why is this study being done?

The purpose of my project is to assess the levels of physical activity and barriers (if any) during this pandemic and stay at home orders.  You are being asked to fill out this survey because you are experiencing this pandemic and I would like to know if or how your personal physical activity has been affected.

What will happen if I decide to take part in this study?

The survey will consist of 28 multiple choice and open-ended questions. You will answer these same 28 questions for your experience before the stay at home orders and then after/during the stay at home orders. It will take about 30 minutes. The questions in the survey will ask you how many days per week and minutes per day of various different types of physical activity you engage(d) in. There will also be a question asking you “what types of barriers to physical activity have you experienced during the pandemic?”.

What are the risks and benefits of taking part in this study?

I believe there is little risk to you for participating in this research project. You may become stressed or uncomfortable answering any of the survey questions. If you do become stressed or uncomfortable, you can skip the question or take a break. You can also stop taking the survey or you can withdraw from the project altogether.

There will be no direct benefit to you for participating in this survey. The results of this project may help improve public health planning and physical activity interventions in the future.
